Manly Cycles Cycling Club

Hi! Welcome to the Manly Cycles Cycling Club info page. We offer weekly road and mountain bike rides from the shop, starring our capable and experienced staff. Difficulty levels for each ride varies, and we usually have something for everyone, but if you think there's something exciting we're missing out on, we are always open to suggestions.

If you've just joined, please take a minute to read a few special notes we've made for you. This stuff is pretty simple and straightforward, but we just have to be sure you're cool with the rules!

1. Bring a helmet

 Seriously! No helmet no ride.

2. Bring Hydration

Everyone should have at least one bottle of water or a hydration pack.

3. Bring a Puncture Kit

Have your own equipment to repair a flat. Don't rely on anyone else for this stuff! You'll need the following:
 - Pump (hand pump or CO2 cartridges)
 - Inner tube
 - Tyre levers
 - Patch kit (just in case)
 - Multi-tool is never a bad idea. You'll definitely be out there and need it one day. Be a good boy scout and prepare well, nobody likes walking.

4. Have the Right Gear

You don't need to spend a fortune on kit right away. Here's a few of our recommendations to make things easy and comfortable.

 - Gloves - Prevents blisters, keeps knuckles protected from branches and thorny things
 - Knicks - Padded lycra, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it
 - Shoes - Other than bike specific, wear something you can get muddy, tighen properly, and has a good platform for your pedals.
 - Jersey - Benefits include back pockets for your stuff and moisture wicking material for keeping cool
 - Eyewear - Less necessary, but a yellow or orange lens will enhance the trail and reduce glare. Plus, lookin' cool never hurts
 - Warm clothes - If it's going to be cold, dress appropriately. Arm/leg warmers do the trick       nicely

5. Is my bike suitable for the trail?

A few things to consider here. One is your bike's condition. Hasn't seen the light of day since 2009? Brakes 'kind of' working? Archeological dig through the garage required to find the thing? Maybe it's best to have the bike looked at before you throw it and yourself into the winderness. Tell the mechanics you're planning on off-roading, and our guys can do a complete safety inspection and any level of service it requires.

Next, ask if this bike is suitable for off-road mountain biking. Looks can be decieving. Some bikes fall into the 'mountain bike' category but won't hold up under the abuse of riding off-road. This is something we can help you with; it's also a matter of safety. If you are unsure of your bike, ride into the shop and ask us about it before joining the ride.

6.  Am I suitable for the trail?

We will always make a point of describing the route, it's length, and difficulty level. It's important to not bite off more that you can chew. Don't underestimate the effort and skill required to do even a short ride. We want everyone to be confident, learn, and be challenged, but understand your limits. We are familiar with the trails, so call or send us an email if you want to know more about the route.

7. Don't be late!
